We are always looking for good responsible people to work as tutors at our four partnership schools. Peak hiring time is during August and December. We look to place tutors at the Gavin Middle School, the Burke and Dorchester High Schools and the High Schools at South Boston. We work in conjunction with the Boston Public Schools calendar and therefore follow their school including vacation schedules. We pay competitive tutor rates and are in the process of being certified to provide tutor training to our staff. This program will allow our tutors to be certified under the International Tutor Certification Program sponsored by the College Reading and Learning Association.

Tutor Job Description

GEAR UP tutors should be in good academic standing. They should have the interest and willingness to learn strategies for teaching middle school and high school students in math and literacy skill through paid training workshops. Tutors should be skilled in building relationships with their clients. Tutors should be able to project a mature and positive attitude towards education since generally they serve as mentors and role models for participants. They should also have an especially strong understanding and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student body.

Start Date: Summer, Fall and Spring

Qualifications:

  1. University Student in good academic standing
  2. Flexible, creative and self-starter
  3. Demonstrated ability to assist others in understanding and mastering academic work
  4. Sensitivity to the needs of urban middle and high school students
  5. Ability to work at an off-campus site (the Gavin Middle School, Burke and Dorchester high schools and the High Schools at South Boston)
  6. Dependable and responsible individual

Responsibilities:

  1. Attend GEAR UP training sessions and staff meetings as designated by supervisor
  2. Assess students' skills using prescribed testing tools
  3. Prescribe and implement academic assistance to students assigned or referred by program administration
  4. Create alternative materials as needed
  5. Monitor students' progress and provide weekly detailed follow-up documentation
  6. Complete tutor log on each student
  7. Communicate with teachers and administration about students needs, progress and achievements
  8. Provide general student supervision, attend field trips
  9. Administrative and other duties as assigned
